The Small Fires We Ignore (Until They Burn Down the House)

We treat stress like background noise; always there, barely noticed, until it isn’t. That constant ping of emails, the client who changes their mind daily.

We tell ourselves it’s “just work,” but these small fires have a way of spreading. Burnout doesn’t announce itself with dramatic symptoms; it creeps in through Sunday anxiety, forgetting to eat lunch, or snapping at colleagues over minor issues.

Here’s what works:

  • Take a short walk between intense tasks; fresh air resets your brain better than scrolling.
  • Set clear priorities: if everything is urgent, nothing truly is. Ask: “What happens if this waits until tomorrow?”

When you’re exhausted, you’re prone to errors and turning in work below your usual standard. It might be acceptable, but that doesn’t make it your best. Our clients deserve better than our burnout disguised as dedication.
